China has reclaimed the global supercomputing crown after its newly unveiled LineShine supercomputer in Shenzhen was ranked the world’s fastest computer, surpassing the United States’ El Capitan system and ending nearly nine years of US leadership in the prestigious TOP500 supercomputer rankings . The achievement is being viewed as a major milestone in the intensifying US-China technology race , particularly as Beijing accelerates efforts to build advanced computing infrastructure using domestically developed technology amid continuing American export restrictions on high end semiconductors.

According to the latest TOP500 rankings announced at the ISC 2026 conference in Hamburg, Germany, LineShine achieved 2.198 exaflops , enabling it to perform more than two quintillion calculations per second. The system displaced El Capitan, located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, which now ranks second with 1.809 exaflops. The latest rankings confirm that only five publicly verified exascale supercomputers currently exist worldwide.

Installed at China’s National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, LineShine is powered entirely by Chinese-developed hardware and software , including custom LingKun LX2 processors , the proprietary LingQi interconnect , and Kylin OS . Unlike most modern supercomputers that depend heavily on GPUs for artificial intelligence workloads, LineShine operates solely on CPUs, incorporates approximately 13.79 million processing cores , and consumes about 42.2 megawatts of electricity.

The system also secured the top position on the HPCG benchmark , widely regarded as a better measure of real world scientific computing performance. While experts note that LineShine’s victory does not necessarily place China ahead in AI computing, the achievement highlights the country’s growing ability to develop cutting edge high performance computing , advanced processors , and strategic digital infrastructure without relying on foreign chip technology.
