German club Wolfsburg has confirmed that Christian Eriksen will begin an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark following the midfielder's collapse during an international friendly last month.

In a brief statement released on Thursday, Wolfsburg said it remains in regular contact with the Danish star and the doctors supervising his treatment. The club added that it continues to wish Eriksen the very best as he progresses through his recovery.

The 34-year-old suffered the alarming incident on June 7 during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense . Eriksen clutched his chest before collapsing on the field, prompting immediate medical attention. Teammates quickly formed a protective circle around him, scenes that reminded many of his cardiac arrest during the 2021 European Championship .

Unlike the dramatic events of five years ago, Eriksen was able to leave the pitch on his own and was taken to hospital for further examinations. The following day, he reassured supporters by revealing that he was "doing well" and had already returned home to be with his family.

Eriksen also explained that the latest incident was caused by a shock from the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) that was fitted after his 2021 cardiac arrest. While acknowledging the emotional impact the episode had on him and his loved ones, he stressed that it was a different situation from the one that threatened his life during the European Championship.

The experienced midfielder joined Wolfsburg on a two-year deal as a free agent in September last year. Although he could not help the club avoid relegation from the Bundesliga, Eriksen remained a key figure in the squad and captained the side in its final match, a playoff defeat to Paderborn .

For now, football takes a back seat as one of Denmark's greatest players focuses on his health and recovery, with both Wolfsburg and fans around the world hoping to see him regain full strength in the months ahead.
