India on Tuesday marked the Raising Day of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) , one of the country’s key Central Armed Police Forces tasked with protecting critical infrastructure and strategic installations. The occasion, observed every year on March 10, honours the dedication, professionalism and sacrifices of CISF personnel who safeguard vital national assets and public facilities across the country.

The CISF was established under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968 , and was formally raised in 1969 to provide specialised security to public sector industrial undertakings that were crucial to India’s economic growth. Beginning with a modest strength of around 3,000 personnel, the force has expanded significantly over the decades. Today, it has grown into a formidable security organisation with more than 2.2 lakh personnel deployed nationwide.

Initially focused on protecting industrial units, the CISF’s responsibilities have broadened considerably with the country’s expanding infrastructure network. The force now secures a wide range of establishments including airports, seaports, metro rail systems, power plants, nuclear and space facilities, government buildings and heritage monuments . In addition to guarding key installations, the CISF also provides fire protection services, disaster response support and specialised security consultancy to both public and private sector organisations.

Operating under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs , the CISF plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and continuity of essential services that support India’s economic and strategic interests. The force is also responsible for aviation security at many airports across the country and has developed specialised units trained to respond to emerging security challenges.

On the occasion of CISF Raising Day, several leaders conveyed their greetings to personnel of the force and their families. Manoj Sinha praised the CISF for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s critical infrastructure. In a message posted on X , he said the country is proud of the service and sacrifices of CISF personnel and saluted their courage and dedication to duty.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also lauded the force for its crucial role in protecting India’s industrial and infrastructure assets, highlighting that strong security systems are essential for sustaining economic growth and national development.

The Raising Day celebrations serve as a reminder of the CISF’s evolving role in India’s security framework. As the country continues to expand its infrastructure and industrial base, the force remains a key pillar in protecting critical installations and ensuring the safety of millions of citizens.
