CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls on BJP Workers to Raise ₹12 Crore for Assam Flood Victims

As Assam slowly recovers from one of the worst flood spells of the year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the state BJP unit aims to raise ₹12 crore through voluntary contributions from party workers to provide relief materials to families affected by the disaster.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the initiative is a party-led humanitarian campaign focused on helping those who continue to struggle despite the gradual improvement in the flood situation. The funds will be used to purchase and distribute clothes to two lakh women and two lakh children, many of whom lost their belongings during the deluge.

Appealing to BJP workers across the state, the chief minister urged them to contribute generously to the relief effort. He said donations below ₹2,000 can be handed over to local BJP MLAs, while contributions above ₹2,000 should be deposited directly into the Assam BJP's designated bank account. The campaign relies entirely on voluntary donations from party workers and is separate from government-funded disaster relief measures.

The fundraising drive comes as Assam continues to grapple with the aftermath of weeks of devastating floods. Although water levels have receded in most affected areas following an improvement in weather conditions, more than 6.5 lakh people across six districts remain affected, according to official figures.

The floods have claimed 66 lives so far this year, leaving thousands of families displaced and causing extensive damage to homes, roads, crops and public infrastructure. Relief and rehabilitation operations are continuing in the worst-hit districts, with authorities working to restore normalcy and provide essential supplies to affected communities.

With recovery efforts entering a crucial phase, Sarma said the BJP's initiative aims to complement ongoing relief work by ensuring that vulnerable families, particularly women and children, receive basic necessities as they rebuild their lives. He urged every party worker willing to support the cause to come forward, saying that collective participation could bring meaningful relief to thousands of flood-hit households across Assam.
