
CM Hosts Dinner for J&K Ranji Trophy Champions, Presents Rs 2 Crore Award
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday hosted a special dinner in honour of the Union Territory’s cricket team, which won the Ranji Trophy for the first time in more than six decades . The Chief Minister, accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues and senior officers, welcomed the players warmly and presented them with a cash award of Rs 2 crore in recognition of their historic achievement. BCCI President Mithun Manhas was also present during the event.
Jammu and Kashmir secured their maiden Ranji Trophy title by holding eight-time champions Karnataka to a draw, achieving a 291-run first innings lead at Hubballi on February 28. This triumph marked a defining moment for cricket in the region, inspiring young athletes across the Union Territory.
The Chief Minister praised the players for their remarkable performance and encouraged them to continue bringing pride to J&K on the national stage . Earlier, Abdullah, an avid cricket fan, had personally travelled to Hubballi to witness the final day of the Ranji Trophy final and announced the Rs 2 crore reward for the players and support staff immediately after the team lifted the trophy.
In addition to the cash prize, Abdullah highlighted that members of the title-winning squad would be eligible for government appointments under the newly notified policy for outstanding athletes , ensuring long-term recognition and support for their contribution to J&K sports.
The event was described as a celebration of dedication, teamwork, and sporting excellence , reflecting the growing stature of cricket in Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Minister’s gesture not only acknowledged the players’ historic achievement but also aimed to motivate the next generation of athletes in the Union Territory.
