Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday inaugurated the state’s first Telangana Public School (TPS) at Arutla in Rangareddy district, formally launching what the government is positioning as a major reform in public education.

The Arutla campus has been designed as an integrated school offering education from pre-primary to Intermediate under one roof. With English-medium instruction, digital classrooms, science laboratories, a library, sports infrastructure, free transport and meal support, the school is being presented as a model for how government education can compete with private and corporate institutions.

The Chief Minister dedicated the school to nearly 27 lakh students studying in government schools across Telangana and said the aim was to restore public confidence in state-run education. He said the future of Telangana would be shaped not merely by infrastructure projects or urban development, but by what happens inside classrooms.

The Arutla TPS has already enrolled 1,814 students , including children in pre-primary, primary, high school and Intermediate sections. The demand for admissions has been so high that the school has reportedly had to put up a “No Admission” board, a development the government is citing as proof that parents are willing to return to public education when quality facilities are made available.

The TPS model is not meant to function as another conventional government school. It is conceived as a large, well-equipped public institution that can serve as a hub for surrounding habitations. Five buses have been arranged for students from Arutla and nearby villages, addressing one of the key reasons rural parents often prefer private schools: transport and convenience.

The government has selected four schools for the pilot phase: Arutla and Manchal in Rangareddy district, and Vangoor and Polkampally in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar region. The larger plan is to establish 100 Telangana Public Schools across the state in phases, with one such institution expected in every Assembly constituency.

According to the blueprint prepared around the recommendations of the Telangana Education Commission , each TPS is expected to cost around ₹15 crore in capital expenditure. The first phase of the rollout is planned for 2026–2028 , while additional schools are expected later based on population and access needs. The state Budget for 2026–27 has earmarked ₹26,674 crore for education, including ₹500 crore for Telangana Public Schools.

The model is also expected to complement, rather than immediately replace, the existing network of government schools and welfare residential institutions. Regular government schools will continue to serve neighbourhood-level access, while TPS campuses are intended to provide higher-capacity, better-equipped public education from early childhood to Intermediate. Social welfare and residential schools, meanwhile, will continue to address the needs of specific student groups and residential education, even as the government pursues broader integration and quality improvement.

On admissions, the government is yet to notify a uniform statewide formula for future TPS campuses. However, the Arutla model suggests that access will be built around local and nearby village catchments, with transport support and integrated schooling meant to reduce dependence on private institutions. Future criteria are expected to become clearer as the remaining pilot schools begin functioning and the 100-school rollout gathers pace.

During the inauguration, Revanth Reddy inspected classrooms, digital learning facilities, science labs, the library, dining hall, kitchen and sports grounds. He also launched the school breakfast programme, interacted with students and teachers, and briefly played football with students on the campus.

The Chief Minister also used the occasion to respond to criticism from the opposition, rejecting allegations of corruption in education-related tenders. He said the government was spending heavily on education as an investment in Telangana’s future. Referring briefly to earlier criticism over football legend Lionel Messi’s Hyderabad visit, he said exposing underprivileged students to global sporting icons was part of the government’s effort to promote sports and confidence among young people.

Ministers, MPs, government advisers, local representatives, education officials and members of the Telangana Education Commission were present at the event.
