CM Revanth Secures Breakthrough on Hyderabad Metro Phase-2
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has secured a key breakthrough for the future expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail network following a series of high-level meetings with Union ministers in New Delhi. The discussions focused on the proposed takeover of Metro Phase-1 assets and the rollout of the long-awaited Phase-2 expansion project .
During meetings held over two days, Revanth Reddy met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw , Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy , and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar . The leaders reviewed the challenges associated with acquiring the existing metro infrastructure and explored ways to accelerate the next phase of Hyderabad’s mass transit development.
As an outcome of the discussions, the Telangana government and the Centre jointly agreed to appoint SBI Capital Markets Limited (SBICAPS) as a consultant to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the metro project. The consultancy will evaluate the value of Hyderabad Metro Phase-1 , examine funding options for its takeover, and identify potential lending institutions for financial support.
In addition to assessing the existing network, SBICAPS will prepare a detailed report on the proposed Metro Phase-2 expansion. The study will cover project costs, financing models, implementation strategies and other critical aspects required for the execution of the next phase. The report is expected to provide a clear roadmap for both governments before major investment and policy decisions are taken.
The appointment of an independent consultant is being viewed as a crucial step toward resolving financial and operational issues linked to the metro project. Hyderabad’s metro system is regarded as one of the city’s most important urban transport assets, serving lakhs of commuters and helping reduce road congestion across key corridors.
Officials said the recommendations submitted by SBICAPS will form the basis for future decisions on project funding, ownership structure and expansion plans. To ensure the study is completed without delay, both governments have also agreed to appoint senior nodal officers for coordination. A senior official from the Centre and the Special Chief Secretary of Telangana’s Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department will oversee the process and facilitate coordination between the two sides.
The latest development signals renewed momentum for Hyderabad’s metro expansion plans and reflects growing cooperation between the state and Central governments in strengthening urban infrastructure. With Phase-2 expected to enhance connectivity across emerging residential, commercial and industrial zones, the project is seen as a vital component of the city’s long-term growth strategy.
