CM Vijay Chairs First TVK Alliance Meet, Focuses on Bypolls and Coalition Coordination

The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday held its first formal meeting with alliance partners since assuming office, signalling efforts to strengthen coalition coordination ahead of the upcoming Assembly by-elections and local body elections in Tamil Nadu.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister and TVK founder Joseph C. Vijay , was attended by leaders from the Congress, VCK, MDMK and IUML, all of which are extending outside support to the government. The Left parties skipped the meeting, stating they were providing only outside support.

Sources said the hour-long meeting focused on ensuring a stable coalition government , improving coordination among allies and completing the government's full five-year term . Discussions also centred on preparing a united strategy for the seven pending Assembly by-elections and the local body polls, for which dates are yet to be announced.

State Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said the alliance unanimously agreed to adopt an official name for the TVK-led coalition , with Chief Minister Vijay expected to announce it after consulting alliance partners.

Congress MP S. Jothimani said the alliance remained strong because its partners shared a common commitment to secularism , adding that TVK considered suggestions from all its allies. TVK sources also indicated that an alliance coordinator is likely to be appointed soon to streamline coordination.

The seven by-elections include Tiruchirappalli East , vacated by Vijay after retaining Perambur , and six seats left vacant following the resignation of AIADMK legislators. Though the poll schedule is yet to be announced, the meeting is being viewed as a significant move to consolidate the ruling alliance and present a united front ahead of the upcoming electoral contests.
