Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday warned the opposition DMK against repeatedly demanding evidence for corruption allegations linked to the previous regime, saying he has “incriminating files” from three government departments containing supporting evidence.

Addressing the Assembly, Vijay said the files had already been reviewed and were currently on his table. He cautioned the opposition against forcing him to disclose their contents, asserting that the details would be made public “at an appropriate time.”

“Initially, I did not want to make a statement. But the opposition is demanding evidence,” Vijay said, referring to an earlier statement by Finance Minister N Marie Wilson that files from three departments had been placed before the Chief Minister following a review.

Vijay stressed that the files were not the result of a random exercise and contained what he described as proof of alleged wrongdoing. “Don’t force me to reveal. I shall do it at an appropriate time,” he told the House.

The Chief Minister also defended his approach to responding to political criticism, saying he knew when and how to speak to the people. He credited his communication with voters for the mandate that brought his party to the Assembly.

The remarks came amid rancorous scenes in the Assembly, with opposition members demanding documentary evidence for the ruling TVK’s allegations of corruption during the previous DMK government.

School Education Minister A Rajmohan questioned the opposition’s demand for proof, saying ministers had already highlighted alleged lapses. He added that the opposition should consider what could happen if the Chief Minister decided to make the evidence public.

The situation escalated as DMK members repeatedly shouted and interrupted Vijay’s reply. Speaker J C D Prabhakar intervened, asking the protesting members to return to their seats.

Vijay subsequently reiterated that the three departmental files and supporting evidence were in his possession, while maintaining that their contents would be disclosed when he considers the timing appropriate.
