A Colombian humanitarian aid ship carrying nearly 100 tons of food, medicines and essential supplies arrived in Cuba on Friday, offering support as the island struggles with a prolonged economic crisis, fuel shortages and recurring power outages .

The vessel departed from Cartagena in early June and entered Havana Bay under the Colombian flag. Colombia's Presidential Agency for International Cooperation said the shipment, sent on the instructions of President Gustavo Petro , included non-perishable food, hospital supplies, electrical materials, solar panels and other essential goods. It also carried seven tons of donations collected by solidarity groups.

The delivery comes amid growing regional efforts to help Cuba address shortages of critical supplies. Last weekend, another ship carrying 1,700 tons of essential goods from Mexico and Belize arrived in Havana, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen supply-chain support for the island.

Cuba continues to face significant economic challenges, including limited access to foreign currency, import constraints and disruptions in the availability of basic goods. The country's energy sector remains particularly vulnerable, with domestic production meeting only about 40 percent of its oil needs , contributing to widespread electricity outages that have affected households, businesses and public services.

The situation has been further complicated by longstanding U.S. sanctions . In January, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba, increasing pressure on the island's already strained economy.

Washington has linked any easing of sanctions to political and economic reforms, including the release of political prisoners. Meanwhile, Cuba continues to seek international partnerships and humanitarian assistance to stabilize essential services and ease the impact of its ongoing economic difficulties.
