The Commission of Inquiry constituted to investigate the 2023 Manipur violence concluded a three-day visit to the state, during which it inspected several relief camps housing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across both valley and hill districts.

According to an official statement issued on Saturday, the delegation was led by Justice (Retd.) B.S. Chauhan , chairman of the commission, and included members Himanshu Sekhar Das (Retd. IAS) and Aloka Prabhakar (Retd. IPS) . The team was in Manipur from May 29 to May 31 .

During the visit, the commission toured relief centres in Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal West, and Imphal East districts, interacting with displaced residents and assessing conditions in the camps. The delegation also met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and briefed him on the findings and observations gathered during the visit.

The inquiry panel’s visit comes as thousands of people affected by the ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur in 2023 continue to live away from their homes. The prolonged displacement has highlighted the challenges of rehabilitation, community reconciliation, and the restoration of normalcy in the conflict-hit state.

Observers say the commission’s engagement with displaced communities is an important step in documenting grievances and understanding the human impact of the violence. Its findings are expected to contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring accountability and shaping future policy responses.

As Manipur continues its long road to healing and accountability , the experiences of those still living in relief camps remain central to any lasting resolution and peace-building process.
