Complaint filed in Pune over Hardik Pandya’s flag use during post match celebration
A legal complaint has been filed seeking the registration of an FIR against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya , alleging that he insulted the national flag during celebrations following India’s triumph in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup .
According to police officials, advocate Wajid Khan submitted a written complaint at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station , urging authorities to take legal action against the cricketer. The complaint pertains to the victory celebrations held at a stadium in Ahmedabad after India defeated New Zealand in the final on Sunday.
A police officer confirmed that the complaint had been received and was under examination, though no FIR had been registered as of Wednesday evening.
In his application, Khan alleged that Pandya wrapped the Indian tricolour around his body during the celebrations and engaged in what he described as “obscene behaviour” on the ground. The complaint argues that such actions amount to disrespect toward the national flag.
“The act constitutes an offence under the relevant law, and legal action should be taken,” the complaint states, adding that every citizen has a duty to uphold the dignity of the national flag. Advocate Khan explained that during the T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya celebrated his victory while the national flag was tied to his back , saying, “According to the 1971 National Flag Act, the flag’s dignity must be respected. Lying with his girlfriend wearing the flag is an insult to it.”
The celebratory scenes unfolded after India secured a memorable victory over New Zealand to lift the T20 World Cup trophy, triggering widespread celebrations among players and fans. Images and videos from the ground showed players draped in the tricolour while rejoicing with teammates and supporters.
However, the complaint has now introduced a legal angle to the otherwise jubilant celebrations. Police officials said they will review the complaint and determine whether the allegations warrant further action under laws related to the respect of national symbols .
So far, Pandya has not publicly responded to the allegations.
