The Congress has levelled serious allegations of a large-scale land scam in Ujjain involving Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and his family, claiming that land holdings increased significantly after he assumed office in December 2023. The BJP has strongly rejected the charges, calling them “baseless and politically motivated.”

According to Congress leaders, including state president Jitu Patwari , the Chief Minister and his family members allegedly acquired around 137 plots covering nearly 168 acres after December 2023. The Opposition further claimed that total land holdings linked to the family and associated entities have risen to nearly 335 acres in and around Ujjain.

The Congress has alleged that these purchases are worth approximately ₹45 crore and are located in areas where the government later announced or proposed infrastructure projects, road expansions, and changes under the Ujjain Master Plan . The party has suggested that this may have resulted in unfair appreciation of land value , raising concerns of conflict of interest.

Terming the issue as a case of “plunder of Mahakal’s land,” the Congress has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister and called for a Supreme Court-monitored judicial inquiry into the alleged transactions. It has also questioned how land holdings linked to the family reportedly increased from about 100 acres to over 300 acres after Yadav took office.

In response, BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal dismissed the allegations, stating there was no truth in the claims and accusing the Congress of targeting leaders from backward communities. He said the allegations were an attempt to create confusion and weaken political leadership.

Khandelwal clarified that according to the Chief Minister’s 2023 nomination affidavit , Mohan Yadav owns about 17 acres of land , while his wife holds 12.29 acres , and his son owns 16 acres , with no changes since before 2023. He also stated that a 10-acre purchase by a family member in 2025 is located outside the master plan area and does not fall under any developed or commercial zone.

The BJP further said that land holdings cited by Congress existed before implementation of the master plan , and denied any wrongdoing. It also noted that the Chief Minister had resigned from a private company’s directorship in 2017, distancing him from its current operations.

The controversy continues to fuel a political confrontation in Madhya Pradesh, with Congress demanding accountability and the BJP insisting the allegations are unsubstantiated and politically driven .
