CPI(M) Boycotts Priyadarshini Launch, Alleges UDF Scaled Back Free Travel Promise
The CPI(M) on Sunday announced that its MLAs would boycott the inauguration of the Priyadarshini programme , which offers free travel for women in select Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses, alleging that the ruling UDF government has failed to fulfil a key election promise.
CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan said the UDF had promised free travel for women across KSRTC services during the election campaign but has now restricted the benefit to around 1,000 ordinary-category buses . He claimed the limited number of eligible buses, particularly in North Kerala, would reduce the scheme's reach and accused the government of diluting its poll commitments.
Govindan also cited other alleged shortcomings in implementing election promises, including the government's support for ASHA workers. “What they promised is not being implemented. We will not cooperate with a programme that amounts to deceiving the people,” he said.
The Priyadarshini programme is scheduled to be inaugurated by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan today. The state government will reimburse KSRTC for expenses incurred under the scheme, which was one of the UDF's five major election guarantees.
Responding to the criticism, Transport Minister C.P. John defended the initiative and urged the CPI(M) to reconsider its decision, maintaining that the government remains committed to delivering its welfare promises.
The boycott reflects a broader political disagreement over the implementation of election pledges in Kerala. While the CPI(M) argues that the government has scaled back promised benefits, the UDF maintains that the scheme is a significant welfare measure aimed at improving women's mobility and reducing travel costs across the state.
