A Central Reserve Police Force jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, marking the second such incident in the region within days , officials said.

The deceased was identified as constable Ajeet Singh of the 96 Battalion of the CRPF, posted as a driver at the SICOP area in Bijbehara in south Kashmir. Officials said Singh was found critically injured after gunshots were heard from his post . He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Preliminary enquiry indicates that Singh used his service rifle to shoot himself. However, officials stressed that no suicide note has been recovered , and no confirmed motive has been established so far. The exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, and investigators are examining personal, professional and operational factors . Authorities said no prior mental health complaint had been officially recorded against the jawan, adding that it would be premature to link the death to psychological distress until the investigation is complete.

This incident follows the recent death of an Indian Army soldier in the region under similar circumstances, raising concerns within security establishments. In that case too, officials had said no immediate reason was identified , and a detailed departmental and forensic probe was initiated. Police have registered a case in the present matter, while the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Further details are awaited as the enquiry progresses.
