Da Vinci 5 Enters India, Bringing a New Era of Robotic Surgery

India’s rapidly expanding robotic-assisted surgery ecosystem is entering a new phase with the introduction of Intuitive’s da Vinci 5, the company’s latest-generation multiport robotic surgical system that combines Force Feedback, advanced 3D imaging, integrated workflows, connected learning and more than 10,000 times the computing power of its predecessor, da Vinci Xi.

The launch comes as robotic surgery moves beyond a niche technology concentrated in major hospitals and becomes increasingly established in India’s advanced healthcare system. Intuitive said more than 2,000 robotic-assisted trained surgeons are now working in India, while over 275 da Vinci systems have been installed across major private and government hospitals. More than 200,000 da Vinci procedures have been performed in the country, while India’s growing evidence base includes 50 clinical studies. The initial da Vinci 5 rollout will focus on selected hospitals and programmes to build experience and support responsible adoption.

Da Vinci 5 builds on the da Vinci Xi platform and incorporates more than 150 enhancements. Its most notable addition is Force Feedback, designed to help surgeons sense push-and-pull forces exerted on tissue through the console controls. Intuitive has reported up to 43% lower tissue force in testing, although this does not establish better patient outcomes. A study of 68 colorectal surgeries found lower applied force with higher Force Feedback settings but no significant differences in bowel recovery or hospital stay, highlighting the need for further clinical research.

The system’s 10,000-fold increase in computing power provides a foundation for new sensors, software and surgical analytics. Features such as Force Gauge and In-Console Video Replay are designed to provide surgeons with additional real-time information and support performance review. The platform could also support future AI-assisted surgical capabilities and telesurgery, although remote procedures would require regulatory approval, reliable connectivity and appropriate safeguards.

India’s robotic-surgery journey began with the installation of its first system at AIIMS New Delhi in 2006. The market has since expanded, with the US Department of Commerce estimating its value at $851 million in 2023 and projecting it could approach $4 billion by 2031.

However, cost, training and access remain major challenges. Indigenous platforms such as SSI Mantra are increasing competition and could influence affordability. Ultimately, da Vinci 5’s impact will depend not only on technological sophistication but on whether its capabilities translate into better clinical outcomes, stronger surgical training and wider access across India.
