Dakshina Kannada Declares School Holiday as Red Alert Issued for Heavy Rain

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and pre-university colleges on July 8 following a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall, as authorities intensified precautionary measures to safeguard residents during the ongoing southwest monsoon.

The notification was issued by the Deputy Commissioner after weather forecasts indicated the likelihood of intense rainfall across the coastal district. Officials have warned that prolonged rain could trigger mudslides in hilly areas , prompting the administration to strengthen disaster preparedness.

An advisory issued by the district administration has urged tourists to avoid riversides, beaches and hill stations , citing the heightened risk of flooding, landslides and other rain-related incidents. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough weather conditions, while all taluk-level officials have been directed to remain at their headquarters to ensure a swift emergency response if required.

This is the second time during the 2026 monsoon season that Dakshina Kannada has been placed under a red alert , leading to the closure of educational institutions as a preventive measure. A red alert is issued when extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204 mm within 24 hours is expected, indicating the potential for significant disruption and danger.

The decision reflects Karnataka's continued emphasis on disaster preparedness , with district authorities prioritising public safety through timely school closures, travel advisories and emergency coordination as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect several parts of the state.
