
Deadly school shooting shocks Canada: 10 dead in British Columbia town
A shooting at a secondary school in British Columbia left eight people dead , including the suspected shooter, while two more bodies were discovered at a nearby home, Canadian authorities said on Tuesday. More than 25 people were injured in the attack , making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canada in recent years.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers reached Tumbler Ridge Secondary School within two minutes of receiving the emergency call. On arrival, police found seven people dead at the scene, including a suspect who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An eighth victim later died while being transported to hospital.Tumbler Ridge, a town of around 2,700 people located more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver near the Alberta border, has been left reeling by the tragedy.
Police have not publicly released the name or detailed identity of the attacker. Authorities said the suspected shooter was a woman who was found dead at the school from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and is included among the 10 fatalities.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said the motive behind the attack remains unclear. “We are still working to determine how the victims are connected to the shooter,” he told reporters.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was devastated by the shooting and expressed gratitude to first responders. He has suspended planned domestic and international travel in light of the tragedy.
Tuesday’s attack is Canada’s deadliest mass shooting since 2020 , when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that left another nine dead . The investigation into the Tumbler Ridge shooting is ongoing.
