Deep Depression Over Bay of Bengal Likely to Intensify into Cyclonic Storm, Andhra Coast on Alert

A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said on Sunday.

The weather system is currently moving northwestwards and is expected to cross the north Odisha-West Bengal coast between Paradip and Sagar Island by Monday morning or afternoon. Authorities are closely monitoring its movement and intensity as the system could bring strong winds, rough seas and rainfall in coastal areas.

APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said the sea is expected to remain rough with high waves, while strong winds of up to 65 kmph are likely along the north Andhra coast over the next 24 hours. He warned that boats measuring less than seven metres in length are unsafe for operation and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until Wednesday.

The weather system is also expected to influence rainfall patterns across several parts of Andhra Pradesh. Light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Eluru, Visakhapatnam and Konaseema districts on Monday.

The APSDMA has urged people living in coastal areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. Fishermen and residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to take necessary precautions as the cyclone development may lead to changing weather conditions along the eastern coastline.

The monitoring of the system is aimed at ensuring timely warnings, disaster preparedness and minimising risks to coastal communities, fishing activities and infrastructure.
