The Defence Ministry has signed contracts worth ₹5,083 crore for the procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk III for the Indian Coast Guard and Shtil surface to air missile systems for the Indian Navy.

The ₹2,901 crore helicopter contract has been inked with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the maritime variant of the ALH, along with operational role equipment, engineering support and performance based logistics. The twin engine helicopters are equipped for a range of maritime security missions, including search and rescue, offshore asset protection and environmental response.

The Coast Guard currently operates an estimated 30 to 35 helicopters , including around 20 ALH Mk III platforms, with older Chetak helicopters being phased out. The induction of six additional ALHs will significantly strengthen coastal surveillance and rapid response capability along India’s 7,500 km coastline , island territories and offshore installations.

Based on typical HAL production cycles, deliveries are expected to begin within 24 to 36 months , placing induction likely between 2027 and 2028 .

Separately, the ministry signed a ₹2,182 crore contract with Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport for vertical launch Shtil missile systems and associated equipment. The missiles will enhance the layered air defence capability of frontline naval warships with rapid reaction, all weather engagement capacity. Delivery timelines for such follow on naval missile orders typically range between 18 and 30 months , subject to production and integration schedules.

The agreements underscore India’s continued push to modernise maritime capabilities while sustaining longstanding defence cooperation with Russia.
