Delhi Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises to Three, FIR Filed as Probe Begins
The death toll in the Rohini building collapse has risen to three , with rescue teams recovering two more bodies from the debris during an overnight operation. Authorities have also registered an FIR and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy that struck a four-storey building under construction in northwest Delhi.
The structure collapsed around 4.20 pm on Wednesday at properties G-4/152 and G-4/153 , near an MCD school in Sector 16, Rohini , amid heavy rainfall, triggering a large-scale emergency response.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal , one labourer, Saddam alias Ravi (32) , was rescued alive from the rubble and rushed to hospital for treatment. Police clarified that only one person was injured , revising an earlier estimate that had placed the number of injured at five.
The three victims have been identified as Ram (42) , a local tailor; Kafe alias Nurul (24) , a labourer; and Ram Dua (62) , the father of the building owner. Ram was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, while the remaining two bodies were recovered during the prolonged search operation.
Officials said the rescue operation is nearly complete , with debris removal continuing to ensure no one remains trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
The operation involved coordinated efforts by the Delhi Police , Delhi Fire Services (DFS) , National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) , Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) , the Revenue Department , and other emergency agencies, supported by heavy machinery.
The MCD stated that the building had received sanctioned plans under the SARAL Scheme , which grants automatic building approvals based on self-certified submissions by registered architects or engineers.
A preliminary assessment suggested that plumbing work was underway when the building collapsed and that drilling or cutting of structural components , including beams and columns, may have weakened the structure. However, civic authorities stressed that the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed technical examination , while the newly registered FIR is expected to guide the criminal investigation.
