Delhi Census Phase 1: Wide Housing Coverage And 2.3 Crore Population Recorded
In the first phase of the Census 2027, provisional data shows that Delhi has recorded extensive coverage of population and housing stock during the ongoing House Listing Operations (HLO), officials said.
The exercise, conducted by Press Trust of India, covered 75,98,982 census houses and 54,98,560 households across all 13 districts through 45,863 House Listing Blocks (HLBs) , each comprising around 180 houses.
Officials said 2,30,78,796 people were found to be ordinarily residing in the national capital during Phase 1. The figure remains provisional and will be finalised only after the Population Enumeration phase scheduled for February 2027.
Recent district-level updates show North East Delhi emerging as the most populous region with about 28.7 lakh residents , while New Delhi recorded the lowest population. South West district led in both household and housing stock coverage.
Additional operational data shows that over 95% of houselisting work has been completed , with more than 2.1 crore people and over 74 lakh households already mapped in earlier coverage stages , reflecting near-complete field progress ahead of the deadline.
Officials added that the exercise includes digital tools and self-enumeration options, marking a shift toward technology-driven census collection.
The first phase focuses on building inventory, housing conditions, amenities, and household assets, while the second phase will capture detailed demographic and socio-economic information.
Authorities reiterated that the final population of Delhi will be confirmed only after full completion of Census 2027.
