Delhi's average traffic congestion has fallen by nearly one-third over the past three months, following stricter enforcement, infrastructure upgrades and technology-driven traffic management, officials said on Monday.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu reviewed the progress at a high-level meeting with Commissioner of Police Satish Golchha and senior traffic officials, directing Delhi Police to expand AI-based and digital traffic management systems for round-the-clock monitoring and improved enforcement.

According to officials, the city's average congestion length, tracked through Google Maps at 15-minute intervals, dropped from 48.25 km during January-March to 32.43 km between April and June 25 .

The improvement has been attributed to increased deployment of traffic police, foot patrolling, engineering interventions and technology-based enforcement. Under the Delhi Traffic Police's Project Sangam , congestion declined at 34 of 62 priority hotspots , with Pushta Road, Kailash Nagar recording an 82.59 per cent reduction, Khajuri Chowk 74.29 per cent , and Teen Murti roundabout 66.01 per cent .

However, congestion worsened at Naraina Flyover , South Extension Part-I , Max Hospital, Saket , and Bhavbhuti Marg , while Dwarka Mor, Sarai Kale Khan, Mukarba Chowk and Dabri Gol Chakkar remain major bottlenecks.

Officials said agencies including DMRC, PWD, NHAI, DTC, NDMC and MCD are coordinating to remove encroachments and improve traffic flow. Sandhu said reducing congestion would save time and fuel, curb pollution, and support Delhi's growth as a destination for investment and tourism. He also assured full administrative support to the Delhi Traffic Police and said he would personally inspect key congestion hotspots.
