Delhi experienced a noticeable dip in temperatures on Friday morning after rain and thunderstorms swept across parts of the city a day earlier, offering temporary relief from the intense summer heat .

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that the minimum temperature at Safdarjung, considered Delhi’s primary weather station, fell to 25.3 degrees Celsius from 28.4 degrees Celsius recorded on Thursday. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the national capital, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph later in the day.

Several areas in the city recorded temperatures below seasonal averages. Palam registered a minimum temperature of 24.1 degrees Celsius, while Ridge and Ayanagar recorded 24 degrees Celsius and 25.4 degrees Celsius respectively. Light rainfall was reported in multiple locations, with Safdarjung receiving 4 mm rain during the 24-hour period ending Friday morning.

The changing weather pattern has also improved air quality marginally. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 142 in the “moderate” category on Friday morning, according to Central Pollution Control Board data.

Meteorologists have predicted that parts of north India , including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, are likely to witness intermittent rain and thunderstorms over the next few days due to the influence of western disturbances and moisture-bearing winds. The weather activity is expected to reduce the severity of the ongoing heatwave conditions that affected several northern states this week.

Meanwhile, southern India is expected to receive increased rainfall activity as monsoon conditions strengthen further. Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and adjoining regions are likely to witness moderate to heavy showers in the coming days, with the southwest monsoon gradually advancing across more parts of the country.

Weather officials have also warned that fluctuating temperatures, sudden thunderstorms and prolonged heat spells may continue through the season as India witnesses increasingly erratic climate patterns.
