Parts of Delhi were battered by dust storms and strong winds on Tuesday afternoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of severe thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall across the national capital over the next few hours.

According to the weather department, light to moderate rain accompanied by dust storms is likely at several locations, while severe thunderstorms with lightning and squally winds (sudden, strong gusts of wind that can intensify rapidly during storms) reaching speeds of 80-100 kmph are expected to affect most parts of the city.

In a nowcast warning, a short-term weather forecast issued for localized areas, the IMD placed most of Delhi under a red alert, indicating the possibility of hazardous weather conditions that could disrupt normal life and pose risks to public safety.

The IMD said the warning has been communicated to district administrations and disaster management authorities, urging them to take necessary precautionary measures and remain prepared for any weather-related emergencies.

The strong winds and dust storms reduced visibility in several areas and raised concerns about traffic disruptions, damage to property, and potential interruptions to power supply. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during periods of intense weather activity, avoid taking shelter under trees, and remain cautious while travelling.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Despite the expected rain and thunderstorms, the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius , reflecting the continued heat and humid conditions prevailing in the region.

The latest weather development comes amid fluctuating monsoon conditions in northern India, with authorities closely monitoring the situation as severe weather activity intensifies across the capital.
