Dhanush’s upcoming Tamil film, tentatively titled D56, has officially gone on floors with a grand traditional pooja ceremony at the Maranadu Karuppanasamy Temple near Tiruppachethi in Sivaganga district. The ceremony, held on September 25, marked the beginning of shooting for the actor’s 56th film.

The launch featured Dhanush and members of the cast and crew, while a large number of fans gathered at the temple to catch a glimpse of the actor. As part of the traditional proceedings, an 18-foot-long sickle was offered to the temple deity, while organisers also arranged a Kida Virundhu for those attending the event.

Directed and written by Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, known for the 2024 Tamil film Lubber Pandhu, D56 is expected to be set against rural backdrops in and around the Madurai region. The filmmaker had begun location recce for the project in March, with the production subsequently moving towards its launch.

The film brings together an ensemble cast featuring Dhanush, Vadivelu, SJ Suryah, Preity Mukundhan and Vijay B Kumar. The project is particularly notable for Dhanush’s reunion with Vadivelu after their earlier collaboration in Padikathavan, while SJ Suryah also reunites with Dhanush following their appearance together in Raayan.

Sai Abhyankkar is composing the music, marking another collaboration with Dhanush after their work on D55. The film is being backed by Sithara Entertainments, Primark Productions and Srikara Studios, with Naga Vamsi and Haritha Lingusamy associated with the production.

While social media reports have circulated “Padaiyal” as a possible title, the makers have not officially announced it. In fact, Pachamuthu previously responded humorously to the speculation, leaving the film officially identified as D56 for now.

Details about the storyline and characters are being kept under wraps, though recent reports have described the project as a rural-set mass commercial entertainer. The makers have announced a Summer 2027 theatrical release, adding to anticipation around Dhanush’s latest project.
