Dialogue Only Way to Bridge J&K Trust Deficit, Says Apni Party Chief

Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Monday urged the Centre to initiate meaningful dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that only an inclusive engagement can address public concerns, reduce mistrust and strengthen confidence between the region and the Union government.

Addressing a high-level provincial meeting in Jammu, Bukhari said discussions focused on public grievances, governance challenges and organisational outreach. Senior party leaders and functionaries from across the region participated in the deliberations, according to a party spokesperson.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stated commitment to narrowing the emotional distance between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country, Bukhari said the present moment offers an opportunity to begin constructive conversations with citizens.

He maintained that inclusive dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve genuine issues, bridge the trust deficit, and respond to people's aspirations through democratic engagement.

Taking aim at the National Conference-led government, Bukhari alleged that it had failed to honour the expectations attached to the mandate it received from voters. He claimed pressing public concerns and local grievances had not received adequate attention despite widespread expectations of improved governance.

The Apni Party chief also asked party leaders and workers to strengthen their grassroots outreach, engage directly with residents and remain responsive to issues affecting different communities across Jammu and Kashmir.

Later, while speaking to reporters in Samba district, Bukhari condemned the recent killing of two non-local labourers in Kulgam, describing the incident as deeply disturbing. He called for enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of workers, residents and visitors across the Union Territory.

Reiterating his party's long-standing stand on the constitutional issue, Bukhari said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have a rightful claim to the restoration of statehood, urging the Centre to complete the process at the earliest. He also called for the timely conduct of Panchayat elections, saying stronger grassroots institutions are essential for responsive governance, inclusive development and deeper democratic participation.
