Dinesh Sharma Appointed Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Dr. Dinesh Sharma as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the President’s Secretariat said in an official press communique.

The appointment will take effect from the date on which Dr. Sharma assumes charge of the office.

The President’s Secretariat issued the press communique on September 5 announcing the appointment. The official communication did not provide details about the tenure of the new Lieutenant Governor or specify any other administrative changes following the appointment.

Dr. Dinesh Sharma has held important public positions during his political career. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and has also been a member of the Rajya Sabha.

With his appointment, Sharma will head the administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is administered as a Union Territory. The Lieutenant Governor is the Administrator of the Union Territory and functions within the constitutional and administrative framework applicable to Union Territories.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise a group of islands located in the Bay of Bengal and are administered directly under the Union Government. The Union Territory has its administrative headquarters at Port Blair.

The appointment of a new Lieutenant Governor marks a change at the top of the Union Territory’s administration. Sharma is expected to formally begin his responsibilities after taking charge of the office.
