Dinesh Trivedi Takes Charge as India’s Top Diplomat in Bangladesh, Calls for Stronger Ties
India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh , Dinesh Trivedi , arrived in Dhaka on Friday through the Petrapole Benapole Border , marking the beginning of his diplomatic assignment in the country.
Trivedi, a former Union minister and the first politician to be appointed as India’s envoy to Bangladesh, entered the country in a simple and symbolic manner, walking across the border with his wife, Mrinal Trivedi, carrying a trolley bag. His arrival drew attention as senior officials from both India and Bangladesh received him at the crossing point.
After entering Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi briefly spoke to reporters and said it was “nice to be here,” expressing optimism about his new role. He also highlighted the need for stronger cooperation between the two neighbouring nations, especially in areas such as sports, health, and technology.
He stressed that both countries must combine their strengths for the benefit of future generations, underlining that collective progress would be far more impactful.
“One power alone will not suffice. The power generated when both countries come together is the real power. Let the entire world see that power,” he said, reflecting a message of partnership and shared growth.
Trivedi succeeds Pranay Kumar Verma , a career diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service, who served as High Commissioner for four years. His tenure coincided with major political changes in Bangladesh, including the removal of the government led by Sheikh Hasina following a student driven uprising in August 2024 and the subsequent transition under an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus .
Elections were later held, during which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party emerged as a key political force, with leader Tarique Rahman taking oath as Prime Minister earlier this year, marking a new phase in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
Trivedi’s arrival is being seen as an important diplomatic moment as India and Bangladesh look to strengthen ties after a period of political shifts and changing regional dynamics.
