DMK Moves Supervisory Committee, CBI After SC Declines to Halt CM Vijay's Karur Visit
The DMK has approached the Supreme Court-appointed Supervisory Committee and the CBI after the apex court declined to regulate Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's proposed visit to Karur on July 10 , where he is scheduled to meet families of the 2025 stampede victims.
DMK organising secretary R.S. Bharathi submitted a memorandum to the committee headed by Justice (Retd.) Ajay Rastogi , seeking safeguards to ensure that the Chief Minister's planned distribution of financial assistance, compassionate appointments and other government benefits does not affect the Supreme Court-monitored CBI investigation . The party also urged the CBI to preserve the statements of key witnesses before any interaction with the Chief Minister.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court refused to interfere with Vijay's visit and questioned the DMK over its plea alleging that state ministers could influence witnesses in the case.
In a separate representation, Bharathi sought directions for the CBI to register a case against Public Works Department Minister Aadhav Arjuna , alleging that his July 2 public remarks could influence witnesses and interfere with the ongoing probe.
Reacting to the DMK's move, Electricity Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar accused the opposition of acting out of political fear after facing a setback in the Supreme Court. He questioned why the DMK was seeking CBI intervention when the agency was already investigating the case, alleging that the party had filed an ill-prepared plea and was attempting to malign the Chief Minister. He also claimed the DMK and AIADMK were jointly trying to politically target the ruling TVK.
The Karur stampede on September 27, 2025 , claimed 41 lives and left several others injured. The tragedy is being investigated by the CBI under the supervision of a committee appointed by the Supreme Court, with the latest developments highlighting the continuing legal and political battle surrounding the case.
