Educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday urged citizens to take responsibility for their own actions, saying he was not a “modern Gandhi” or a hero but only an “ordinary citizen” fulfilling his duties.

Wangchuk’s remarks came as his indefinite hunger strike entered the 14th day during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar , which has been ongoing for 22 days over alleged examination irregularities.

In a video message shared on social media, Wangchuk said he felt less energetic compared to the previous day but remained committed to the movement. According to a health update released by the organisation, he has lost 7.5 kg since beginning the fast , while his blood pressure was recorded at 106/74 mm Hg .

Addressing supporters who compared him with Mahatma Gandhi , Wangchuk said such labels made him uncomfortable. “I am neither Gandhi nor a hero. I am just an ordinary citizen who has tried to fulfil my responsibilities,” he said.

He appealed to people not to wait for a leader or a symbolic figure to bring change. “Please don’t look for a hero in someone else. Be the hero of your own life. Fulfil your responsibilities as a citizen,” Wangchuk said.

Referring to student suicides that the CJP has linked to alleged examination irregularities, Wangchuk called upon people to actively participate in the protest instead of remaining silent. He said those unable to travel to Delhi could support the cause by observing a fast at their own locations and sharing their messages.

Wangchuk also reiterated his appeal for people to join the proposed march to Parliament on July 20 , coinciding with the opening day of the Monsoon Session . He said participants did not need to remain hungry for days but should come forward as responsible citizens.

The CJP has been demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation of Rs 1 crore for families of students who allegedly died by suicide over examination-related issues.

The protest began on June 20 , while Wangchuk joined the agitation on June 28 and has continued his indefinite fast since then, seeking accountability over alleged examination irregularities and an early resolution of issues concerning Ladakh.
