Don’t Meddle: Lula Calls On Trump To Stay Out Of Brazil’s Elections
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has warned US President Donald Trump not to interfere in Brazil’s upcoming elections, saying, "Don't interfere in Brazil's elections" amid rising diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
His remarks follow recent criticism from Trump, who described Brazil as "dangerous politically" and suggested judicial actions against allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro were politically motivated.
Lula also rejected renewed US trade pressure, after Washington proposed a 25% tariff on Brazilian imports , calling the measure disrespectful and saying negotiations were still ongoing between both countries.
Tensions escalated further after the US designated two major Brazilian criminal groups as foreign terrorist organizations , a move Lula said was inappropriate because they are profit-driven networks, not politically motivated organisations.
Brazil's Supreme Court recently convicted Eduardo Bolsonaro , son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, for attempting to influence US officials in his father's coup trial, sentencing him to four years and two months in prison .
Speaking at the G7 summit in France, Lula said Trump "doesn't know Brazil well" and reiterated that the country's electoral process is a sovereign matter that must not be influenced by foreign leaders.
Lula has also criticised US sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, calling them politically motivated and part of a broader attempt to influence Brazil's judiciary.
Officials noted that Eduardo Bolsonaro and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro recently held meetings in Washington with US political figures, further intensifying concerns in Brasília over foreign lobbying efforts tied to Brazil's domestic legal proceedings.
Lula emphasised Brazil will defend its sovereignty and democratic institutions ahead of the October vote without any external interference allowed.
