The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur , marking a major milestone in India's efforts to develop advanced indigenous precision-strike weapon systems.

The rocket was tested for a minimum range of 60 km and demonstrated all planned in-flight manoeuvres before striking the designated target with high accuracy and precision . The LRGR followed its predicted trajectory during the mission, while deployed range instruments continuously tracked its performance throughout the flight.

The successful trial highlights India's growing capability in developing homegrown guided rocket technology , including advanced navigation, guidance and strike capabilities. The system is designed to provide the armed forces with improved accuracy, extended range and greater operational flexibility compared with conventional rocket systems.

The Pinaka LRGR has been developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) , with support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) . The trial was coordinated by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) and the Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE) .

A key feature of the test was the launch of the guided rocket from an existing Pinaka launcher , demonstrating the platform’s versatility. The capability allows different Pinaka variants with varying ranges to be deployed using the same launcher system, improving efficiency and strengthening battlefield readiness.

The Pinaka rocket system has become an important component of the Indian Army’s artillery modernisation programme. The development of longer-range guided variants will further enhance the Army’s ability to carry out rapid, accurate and effective strikes against distant targets while improving operational flexibility.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army and industry partners on the successful trial, describing it as a significant achievement in strengthening India's indigenous design and development capabilities for long-range guided rockets .

The successful test reflects the progress of India’s defence research ecosystem and supports the country’s push towards self-reliance in defence technology , reducing dependence on imported systems and enhancing overall national security preparedness.
