Dubai Transfers, SIM Card Claims: Congress Seeks Answers in Veena Vijayan Case
The Congress on Wednesday described the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) findings against Veena T, daughter of former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as “extremely serious” and demanded a clear response from the CPI(M) and the former chief minister.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said the ED’s written findings pointed to alleged unauthorised financial transactions involving Veena and called for a factual and transparent investigation into the matter.
“The written findings of the Enforcement Directorate against Veena Vijayan are extremely serious,” Joseph said in a statement. He alleged that the findings contradicted explanations previously offered by the CPI(M) and demanded that the party and Vijayan respond to the agency’s observations.
The Congress leader’s remarks came after the ED disclosed details of material allegedly recovered during searches conducted against Veena in May. According to the agency, investigators seized handwritten notes containing details of certain fund transfers to Dubai.
The ED also claimed that digital devices recovered during the searches contained a photograph of a SIM card registered in another person’s name. The agency alleged that the SIM card was used by Veena to make internet-based calls.
The federal agency subsequently carried out fresh searches in Kozhikode on August 18, targeting individuals whose names appeared in Veena’s handwritten accounts and the person allegedly linked to the provision of the SIM card.
The money-laundering investigation centres on Kerala-based mining company Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL) and Exalogic Solutions, a technology company promoted by Veena that is now defunct.
The ED’s latest findings have intensified the political dispute surrounding the case, with the Congress seeking greater scrutiny of the alleged financial transactions.
Joseph said Vijayan and the CPI(M) must provide an explanation regarding the findings and urged authorities to pursue the matter without political influence. The Congress has maintained that the allegations warrant a detailed examination of the financial dealings and circumstances outlined by the ED.
