Duleep Trophy: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Gets Red-Ball Audition Ahead of Australia A Series
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be the centre of attention when East Zone face North East Zone in their Duleep Trophy quarterfinal at the Centre of Excellence on Sunday, with the youngster looking to strengthen his credentials in the longer format.
The 15-year-old has already become a major name in T20 cricket, but his First-Class record remains modest. He has played eight matches for Bihar, batting in 12 innings, with a highest score of 93 and an average of just over 17.
The Duleep Trophy presents Sooryavanshi with a valuable opportunity to change those numbers. North East have an inexperienced attack, potentially giving the teenager the time and conditions to build a substantial innings. East have also named him vice-captain, adding responsibility to his campaign.
The tournament could carry added significance as selectors look towards the upcoming India A series against Australia A. India A are scheduled to play two four-day matches in Puducherry in late September and early October, and strong Duleep Trophy performances could strengthen the case for selection.
East also have considerable experience in their squad, including captain Ishan Kishan, pacer Mohammed Shami, former India A skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran, Kumar Kushagra, Shahbaz Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the other quarterfinal will see North Zone take on West Zone. North will be led by Kanhaiya Wadhawan, the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to captain the senior zonal team following the state's historic 2025-26 Ranji Trophy triumph.
West, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, will miss Sarfaraz Khan, who is on national duty in Sri Lanka, but still boast players such as Shardul Thakur, Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani.
North will also be without pacers Gurnoor Brar and Auqib Nabi, who are with India in Sri Lanka.
For Sooryavanshi, however, the equation is simple: runs could turn a T20 sensation into a serious red-ball prospect.
