The Ebola outbreak spreading across the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda has entered a worrying new phase, with the death toll crossing 200 within just a month of its confirmation and infections rising at an alarming pace.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the outbreak has already resulted in 894 confirmed cases , making it one of the most severe Ebola emergencies seen in the region at this stage. Health officials reported that the number of infections has increased by 38 percent in just one week , highlighting the rapid spread of the virus across eastern Congo and into Uganda.

Experts describe the outbreak as significantly worse than Uganda's major Ebola epidemic in 2000. The current crisis has already recorded nearly three times as many cases as were reported during a similar period in that outbreak.

A major challenge for health authorities is that this epidemic is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus , for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments. While researchers are working on experimental therapies, frontline medical teams continue to rely primarily on supportive care and containment measures.

The outbreak is concentrated in Ituri province in eastern Congo, which accounts for more than 90 percent of all reported infections. Cases have also been detected in North Kivu and South Kivu , while Uganda has confirmed 19 infections and two deaths linked to the cross-border spread of the disease.

Health officials say contact tracing remains the biggest obstacle in containing the outbreak. Based on current infection levels, authorities estimate that between 17,000 and 35,000 people may have come into contact with confirmed patients. However, only around 4,000 contacts have been identified and are currently being monitored.

The situation is further complicated by years of armed conflict and humanitarian instability in the region. Nearly a million people have been displaced in Ituri, forcing many families to move frequently and making it extremely difficult for health workers to track potential infections. Remote villages, dense forests, poor road networks and the movement of thousands of miners across the mineral-rich region have added to the challenge.

Despite international pledges exceeding $900 million , only a fraction of the promised funds has been released. Africa CDC officials say the response remains severely understaffed, with just 84 personnel deployed against an estimated requirement of 540.

While 74 patients have recovered so far, health experts warn that the outbreak remains far from under control. With infections continuing to rise and critical resources still lacking, authorities are urging governments and international partners to accelerate financial support and strengthen response efforts before the crisis escalates further.
