A woman who recently returned from South Sudan has been admitted to an isolation ward at Kottayam Medical College after developing a fever, prompting health authorities to initiate precautionary measures and conduct tests for the Ebola virus , officials said on Thursday.

According to health officials, the woman approached a private hospital in Pala on Wednesday after experiencing fever. Taking into account her recent travel history from the African nation, the hospital alerted the Kerala Health Department , which subsequently arranged for her transfer to Kottayam Medical College for further evaluation.

Officials said the woman has been admitted to a specially designated isolation ward as a precautionary measure. Blood samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to determine whether she has been infected with the Ebola virus.

Health authorities emphasized that the testing is being carried out in line with established safety protocols and that there is currently no confirmation of an Ebola infection . The test results are awaited.

The development comes amid heightened vigilance by the Kerala Health Department over reports of Ebola cases abroad. The department had earlier issued an alert to hospitals across the state, directing them to remain vigilant and closely monitor individuals arriving from African countries .

Officials said surveillance measures are in place and necessary precautions are being taken to prevent any potential public health risk while ensuring appropriate medical care for the patient.
