Eight Killed, Seven Injured as Pick-Up Vehicle Falls Into Well in Solapur

In a tragic road accident, eight people, including four women and four children, lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries after a pick-up vehicle carrying them plunged into a roadside well in Maharashtra's Solapur district on Sunday.

The accident occurred near Tandulwadi village in Malshiras tehsil , where a pick-up vehicle carrying 15 passengers reportedly veered off the road and fell into a well after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

According to Solapur Superintendent of Police Atul Kulkarni , preliminary findings indicate that the driver was unable to maintain control, causing the vehicle to crash into the roadside well. Rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the spot immediately after the incident was reported.

"Eight people, including four women and four children, were killed while seven others sustained injuries," Kulkarni said. Efforts were launched to pull the vehicle out of the well, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The accident triggered a large-scale rescue operation involving police personnel, local administration officials, and emergency responders. Authorities worked for several hours to recover victims and ensure medical assistance reached the injured without delay.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and described the incident as "extremely unfortunate and tragic." Extending his condolences to the bereaved families, he announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim.

The Chief Minister stated that seven people had been rescued and were undergoing treatment. He also noted that the Solapur district collector and superintendent of police had immediately reached the accident site and that the state government was closely monitoring rescue and relief operations in coordination with local authorities.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety, the use of goods vehicles for passenger transport in rural areas, and the need for stronger safeguards on roads running alongside open wells, water bodies, and other hazardous locations. Police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
