Eight Years On, Karunanidhi’s Political and Cultural Legacy Continues to Inspire Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu on Friday observed the eighth death anniversary of former Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi with tributes and commemorative programmes held across the state. Leading the state-wide remembrance, former Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin paid emotional homage to his father, describing him as a visionary leader whose contributions shaped the political, social, and cultural landscape of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin, accompanied by senior DMK leaders and former ministers, garlanded Karunanidhi’s statue at the Omandurar Government Estate in Chennai. Following the tribute, he led a silent peace rally to Karunanidhi’s memorial on the Marina beachfront, where thousands of DMK cadres, party workers, and supporters joined the march.

At the flower-decked memorial, Stalin placed a wreath and offered floral tributes to the late leader. Later, he visited Karunanidhi’s residences at Gopalapuram and CIT Colony, along with the DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam, to pay his respects.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Stalin highlighted Karunanidhi’s over eight-decade political journey, recalling his five terms as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, 13 terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, and nearly five decades as the leader of the DMK.

Calling him the “sculptor who shaped modern Tamil Nadu,” Stalin said Karunanidhi’s influence extended beyond politics, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil literature, cinema, and arts. Remembering his iconic dark sunglasses and distinctive voice, Stalin said the leader’s legacy continues to remain alive in the hearts of millions.

Karunanidhi, popularly known as Kalaignar, passed away on August 7, 2018, at the age of 94 after decades of public service. Across Tamil Nadu, various DMK wings organised memorial events, welfare initiatives, and social service programmes to honour the leader’s enduring legacy and contributions to the state.
