Eight-Nation Women’s Hockey Qualifier Tournament Opens in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has once again stepped into the international sporting spotlight as the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers began at the GMC Balayogi Hockey Stadium in Gachibowli . Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the tournament on Sunday, marking the start of a week-long competition that will determine key qualifiers for the upcoming global championship.

The Chief Minister formally launched the opening match between India and Uruguay , interacting with players and encouraging them ahead of the tournament. The event drew the presence of several government representatives and sports officials, reflecting the state’s focus on promoting international sporting events.

The qualifiers are being held from March 8 to March 14 , bringing together eight nations competing for a place in the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 , which will be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands in August . The tournament is considered a crucial pathway for teams aiming to secure entry into one of hockey’s most prestigious global competitions.

Teams have been divided into two pools for the preliminary stage. Pool A features Austria, England, Italy, and Korea , while Pool B includes India, Scotland, Uruguay, and Wales . Following the league stage, the top teams will progress to the knockout rounds, intensifying the race for qualification.

The Indian women’s team made a strong start to the tournament with a 4–0 victory over Uruguay in the opening match, delighting the home crowd and boosting their hopes of securing a World Cup berth.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ministers Vakiti Srihari and Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy , MP Anil Kumar Yadav , Government Sports Advisor A.P. Jitender Reddy , PAC Chairman Arekapudi Gandhi , and Telangana Sports Authority Chairman Shivasena Reddy , among others.

Officials expressed confidence that hosting such international competitions would further strengthen Hyderabad’s emergence as a global sports hub . The Gachibowli Hockey Stadium , equipped with international-standard facilities and modern infrastructure, has previously hosted several major tournaments and continues to play a key role in promoting hockey in the region.

With matches scheduled throughout the week, the tournament is expected to provide thrilling action for hockey enthusiasts while offering teams a valuable opportunity to secure their place in the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup .
