As India prepares for upcoming electoral exercises and continues efforts to enhance voter participation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday convened a one-day conference of media and communication officers from across the country, emphasizing the need for timely, factual and citizen-centric communication to strengthen public trust in the electoral process.

The conference brought together more than 350 Media Nodal Officers (MNOs), Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs), District Media Nodal Officers and District Public Relations Officers representing all States and Union Territories . Participants also included officials from states and UTs where Phase-III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is currently underway, as well as poll-bound states.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar , accompanied by Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi , highlighted the growing importance of effective communication in ensuring informed voter participation and safeguarding the integrity of elections.

Gyanesh Kumar noted that the recently concluded elections in five states witnessed an unprecedented level of public participation since Independence , underscoring the need for communication that is easy to understand, rooted in facts and aligned with the law. He urged officers to ensure that election-related information reaches citizens promptly and accurately.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu said communication efforts should be assessed by their impact on citizens rather than merely the amount of information disseminated. Dr. Vivek Joshi stressed that communication officers serve as a crucial bridge between the Commission and the public by translating complex rules, guidelines and instructions into accessible formats.

The conference featured sessions covering communication strategies throughout the election cycle—from electoral roll management to polling operations. Discussions focused on ECINET , constitutional and legal provisions governing elections, recent Supreme Court rulings, media engagement, social media outreach, misinformation management and public awareness initiatives. Participants also received practical training on drafting press releases, amplifying official information across platforms and engaging young voters through Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) .

The initiative forms part of the ECI’s broader strategy to modernise election communication and expand voter outreach. Through its flagship Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, the Commission has sought to improve electoral awareness among first-time voters, women, urban electors and other underrepresented groups. The ECI has also increasingly leveraged digital platforms, social media campaigns and technology-driven services such as ECINET to make election-related information more accessible.

The conference additionally provided a platform for officials from recently poll-bound states to share experiences and best practices. It concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner, reinforcing the Commission’s focus on transparency, public engagement and effective communication in an evolving digital information landscape.
