Elephant Killed After Being Hit By Goods Train In Raigarh, Chhattisgarh
A female elephant died after being struck by a goods train collision while crossing a railway line in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh , forest officials confirmed, highlighting growing concerns over wildlife movement along railway corridors in the region.
The incident took place around 10 pm on Monday near Chargaon village in the Gharghoda area , when a herd of elephants was attempting to cross a railway track used for coal transportation, said Divisional Forest Officer PM Arvind . During the crossing, a 40-year-old female elephant was hit by a passing freight train and sustained severe traumatic injuries , particularly to its hind limbs, leading to heavy bleeding.
Villagers in the area alerted forest authorities soon after the accident. Forest staff and a rescue team of veterinarians reached the spot during the night and began emergency treatment of the injured animal. Despite sustained efforts and continuous medical intervention, the elephant succumbed to its injuries early Tuesday morning.
Officials said the impact was extremely severe due to the speed and weight of the train, leaving little scope for recovery. The elephant reportedly belonged to a moving herd frequently active in the Gharghoda forest range , which is part of a known elephant movement corridor.
Following the death, the forest department has registered a case and initiated a formal investigation to examine possible lapses in railway monitoring systems , night-time patrolling, and early warning mechanisms along the track.
The incident adds to a series of wildlife fatalities in the region, where increasing elephant movement through human-dominated and industrial landscapes has raised repeated safety concerns for both animals and rail operations.
