Emerging Technologies Have Redefined Modern Warfare, Says Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the rapid emergence of new technologies has fundamentally changed the nature of modern warfare, making it essential for young military officers to be prepared for evolving threats and combat strategies.
Addressing the Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) of the 217th Course at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal , near Hyderabad, Singh said future officers must develop the ability to understand and adapt to changing battlefield conditions shaped by technological advancements.
He noted that military dominance is no longer determined solely by the size of armed forces or conventional weaponry. In the current security environment, even smaller nations can challenge larger powers through innovative tactics and specialised technologies. Officers entering the armed forces must therefore be ready to respond to a wide range of modern warfare scenarios.
Highlighting the growing role of technology, the minister said contemporary conflicts increasingly rely on systems such as radars, satellites, drones, sensors, robotics and cyber capabilities . He pointed out that cyber warfare has emerged as a significant challenge, with the ability to remotely disrupt critical infrastructure, including traffic management and surveillance networks. Success in modern warfare, he said, depends on combining hard work with smart, technology-driven approaches .
Congratulating the graduating cadets, Singh recalled the Indian Air Force's distinguished service to the nation. He cited the 1947-48 Srinagar airlift operations and the decisive air campaigns during the 1971 war , describing them as milestones in the force's history. He also praised the IAF's role in Operation Sindoor , saying precision strikes against terrorist targets reflected both indigenous technological capabilities and the high standards of military training.
The Defence Minister said the IAF continues to inspire the nation through its achievements, including the recent selection of Shubhanshu Shukla for a space mission. He also welcomed the growing participation of women pilots , saying their increasing presence is strengthening the force.
During the ceremony, Singh conferred the President's Commission on graduating flight cadets and presented Wings, Brevets and the prestigious President's Plaques to outstanding trainees from the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Vietnam.
