Emirates Flights Return to Kerala After Security Incident Shuts Dubai Airport
An Emirates flight bound for Dubai was forced to return mid-air to Kochi early Monday after a security-related emergency prompted the temporary suspension of operations at Dubai International Airport , disrupting travel plans for hundreds of passengers.
Flight EK533 , operated by Emirates , departed Cochin International Airport at around 4:30 a.m. carrying about 325 passengers and crew . While flying over the Arabian Sea , the aircraft received instructions to abort the journey after authorities halted arrivals and departures at Dubai International Airport , one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. Following standard aviation safety procedures, the pilots turned the aircraft back and landed safely in Kochi at approximately 8:30 a.m. Emergency services remained on standby as a precaution, though no onboard issues were reported.
In a related development, another Emirates flight operating the Thiruvananthapuram–Dubai route also returned after the airport shutdown. The aircraft, carrying 353 passengers and 19 crew members , had departed Thiruvananthapuram International Airport around 4:40 a.m. but turned back midway and landed safely later in the morning after receiving the same advisory regarding the suspension of operations in Dubai.
Preliminary reports indicated that the disruption was linked to a security incident near a fuel storage facility close to Dubai airport , reportedly involving a drone that triggered a brief fire. Emergency response teams quickly brought the situation under control and no casualties were reported.
Following the incident, Emirates temporarily suspended all flights to and from Dubai and advised passengers not to proceed to airports unless they held a confirmed booking. The airline later announced that it had resumed limited flight operations after the earlier suspension, though some services from the day’s schedule were cancelled due to operational adjustments.
In an official update, the airline said affected passengers would receive cancellation notifications and information about reaccommodation options . Travellers were also advised to check the status of their flights online before heading to the airport, while passengers transiting through Dubai would only be allowed to travel if their connecting flights were operating.
Emirates said it is continuing to monitor the situation and will adjust its flight schedule accordingly. The airline also urged customers to check their email notifications and operational updates before travelling, reiterating that the safety and security of passengers and crew remain its highest priority .
