Ensure Uninterrupted Power Supply Across the State: K. Vijayanand
In view of the expected surge in electricity consumption during the summer, Energy Department Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has directed officials to ensure uninterrupted and quality power supply across the state so that consumers face no difficulties.
Addressing a review meeting on Wednesday, he said power utilities must be fully prepared to manage the rising demand . He stressed that strong coordination between generation and distribution systems is essential to efficiently handle the increased load in the coming months.
Vijayanand noted that the state’s daily electricity requirement could rise to nearly 280 million units by May. Currently, the average daily consumption has already crossed 264 million units , reflecting a 9.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year. He also pointed out that the state grid recorded a peak consumption of 274.6 million units on March 7, while the maximum load exceeded 14,000 megawatts , indicating the intensity of the approaching summer season.
He further stated that the peak power demand is likely to reach around 14,500 megawatts in April. There is also a possibility of a temporary deficit of nearly 400 megawatts , particularly during the early morning hours. To manage this situation, he directed officials to prepare advance power procurement plans.
Power utilities were advised to procure electricity through power exchanges such as the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and the Real-Time Market whenever required to ensure there are no disruptions in supply.
Vijayanand also instructed officials to continuously monitor power generation from thermal power plants and renewable energy sources. Noting the sharp rise in consumption over the past ten days, he said authorities should not hesitate to purchase additional electricity from exchanges if needed.
He emphasized that a well-planned strategy must be implemented to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to all consumers across the state, including households and industries.
