EWC Chess Quarterfinals: Carlsen Faces Nihal, Arjun Meets Nakamura

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 Chess tournament has entered its knockout stage, with defending champion Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja, Hikaru Nakamura and Nodirbek Abdusattorov among the leading players advancing from the group stage. Indian Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Arjun Erigaisi also fought through the elimination route to complete the eight-player quarterfinal line-up.

The chess tournament, being held in Paris from August 11 to 15, features a $1.5 million prize pool and a 16-player field. The group stage was played in a double-elimination format, with four players from each group progressing to the knockout stage.

Firouzja, Abdusattorov Advance From Group A

Alireza Firouzja began his Group A campaign against Wei Yi, with their opening match ending 1.5-1.5 before Firouzja prevailed in the tiebreak. He then faced Arjun Erigaisi in the qualification match. After the regulation games ended level, Firouzja again held his nerve in the decider to secure his playoff place.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov enjoyed a more convincing route through the upper bracket. The Uzbek Grandmaster defeated Pranesh M 2-0 in the opening round before producing another dominant 2-0 victory over Jan-Krzysztof Duda. The two successive wins sent Abdusattorov directly into the playoffs.

The remaining Group A places were decided through the elimination bracket. Nihal Sarin, after losing his opening match to Arjun, kept his campaign alive by defeating Wei Yi 2-1. He then overcame Duda 1.5-0.5 in the decider to book his place in the quarterfinals.

Arjun also bounced back strongly after his defeat to Firouzja. He defeated Pranesh M 2-0 in the decisive lower-bracket encounter, securing the fourth and final playoff spot from Group A.

Carlsen, Nakamura Lead Group B

In Group B, defending champion Magnus Carlsen made a confident start to his title defence. The Norwegian defeated Andrey Esipenko 1.5-0.5 before beating Hans Moke Niemann 1.5-0.5 in the winners' semifinal to advance to the playoffs.

Hikaru Nakamura also progressed through the upper bracket. He defeated Alexey Sarana 1.5-0.5 before overcoming Denis Lazavik 1.5-0.5 to secure his knockout berth.

Lazavik recovered from his loss to Nakamura by navigating the lower bracket successfully. He defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi 1.5-0.5, earning a place among the four Group B qualifiers.

Niemann also remained alive after his loss to Carlsen and fought his way through the lower bracket, defeating Sina Movahed 1.5-0.5 to complete the Group B playoff line-up.

Quarterfinals Begin Today

The group-stage battles have now produced four high-profile quarterfinals, with the knockout stage beginning today, August 14.

The quarterfinal line-up features Magnus Carlsen vs Nihal Sarin, Alireza Firouzja vs Hans Moke Niemann, Nodirbek Abdusattorov vs Denis Lazavik, and Hikaru Nakamura vs Arjun Erigaisi, setting up four highly anticipated clashes in the knockout stage.

The Carlsen-Nihal encounter carries additional intrigue as it is a rematch of their 2025 EWC quarterfinal, when Carlsen defeated the Indian Grandmaster on his way to winning the inaugural EWC Chess title.

For India, having Nihal and Arjun in the last eight represents a strong recovery after both had to negotiate difficult routes through Group A. Pranesh, the other Indian participant in the group, was eliminated, but Nihal and Arjun successfully navigated the lower bracket to keep India's title hopes alive.

The quarterfinal stage leaves no room for another comeback route, making every game crucial. With Carlsen and Nakamura, the tournament's established stars, joined by Firouzja, Abdusattorov, Nihal, Arjun, Niemann and Lazavik, the battle for the EWC Chess crown now enters its most decisive phase.

The winners of the four quarterfinals will move closer to the title, with the semifinals and Grand Final scheduled for August 15.
