A major security lapse has come to light in Haryana's Faridabad after 32 licensed weapons kept in police custody went missing from the malkhana (armoury) of the Sector 8 police station, prompting a criminal investigation, departmental action and heightened scrutiny of police safeguards.

Following the discovery, police registered a theft case against Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Bijendra Singh , the malkhana in charge. Faridabad Police Commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta suspended the officer with immediate effect and ordered a departmental inquiry.

The missing firearms had been voluntarily deposited by licensed owners for safekeeping at the police station and were to be returned when required. During a routine inspection, officials initially found 13 weapons missing, but a detailed verification later established that 32 licensed firearms had disappeared from police custody.

According to police sources, the missing cache includes several foreign-made pistols and other firearms valued between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 10 lakh . Investigators suspect some of the weapons may have been sold in Rajasthan, Noida and other parts of the Delhi NCR region , although no official confirmation has been issued on this aspect. Officials are treating the probe with strict confidentiality, with recovering the missing weapons identified as the top priority amid concerns that they could be misused in criminal activities if not traced quickly.

"The matter is under investigation. Whoever played a role in the theft of the weapons will not be spared," Police Commissioner Gupta said. As of Saturday, no recoveries or additional arrests had been officially announced.
