FIA Court Reinstates Hadjar in P3, Drops Gasly Back to Seventh

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly has been stripped of his third-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix, with Isack Hadjar reinstated in third position following a ruling by the FIA’s International Court of Appeal (ICA).

The decision, issued on Thursday and made public on Friday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, overturns the outcome of Alpine’s earlier successful appeal against penalties handed to Gasly during the Monaco race in June.

Gasly had initially finished third on the track but was given a 10-second penalty for pit-lane speeding, along with other drivers. He did not serve the penalty during the race and was subsequently classified seventh. Alpine later appealed successfully, resulting in Gasly being restored to third and giving the team its first Formula 1 podium since 2024. However, the ICA ruled that overturning Gasly’s penalty would effectively treat him differently from other drivers who had served similar penalties under the same measurement system.

The dispute centred on the measurement of the pit-lane length, which was used to calculate drivers’ speeds. Alpine argued that the benchmark could have made Gasly appear to be travelling faster than he actually was. The ICA acknowledged the issue but concluded that applying a different post-race parameter only to Gasly would be unfair.

“Selectively applying a different post-race parameter” would mean competitors were judged by different standards, the court said. Following the ruling, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri moves up to fourth, while Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad are classified fifth and sixth. Gasly returns to seventh.

Alpine expressed “disappointment and frustration”, saying it believed the team had been unjustly punished. McLaren, meanwhile, welcomed the decision, describing it as providing important clarity.

The case has also raised questions about procedures involving Formula One Management (FOM) and the FIA, with the ICA suggesting that changes to FOM’s processes may be warranted for future events.

Hadjar’s reinstated result confirms his first Formula 1 podium. The French driver is currently sidelined with a wrist injury and will miss his second consecutive race at the Italian Grand Prix.
