Filip Hrgovic Makes History, Stops Moses Itauma To Win IBF Heavyweight Title

Filip Hrgovic survived a fierce early assault from Moses Itauma before producing a dramatic ninth-round stoppage to win the vacant IBF heavyweight world title at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday.

The victory made the 34-year-old Hrgovic the first Croatian heavyweight world champion and ended the unbeaten professional record of one of boxing’s brightest young prospects.

Itauma, 21, started strongly and appeared in control during the opening rounds. The British fighter had never gone beyond the sixth round in his first 14 professional bouts and looked set to continue that impressive run.

Hrgovic, however, showed remarkable resilience. He absorbed a barrage of punches and was even knocked down in the second round, but refused to surrender. The Croatian gradually worked his way back into the contest as Itauma began to tire.

The fight erupted in the eighth and ninth rounds as both men exchanged heavy punches. Hrgovic eventually trapped Itauma against the ropes and unleashed a sustained attack. With Itauma struggling to defend himself, his corner threw in the towel, bringing the contest to an end.

“I was losing every round. I was outboxed. And I don't know from where I got energy,” Hrgovic said. “Look, chin is important.”

The victory improved Hrgovic’s professional record to 22-1. Itauma was treated by medical personnel after the fight and needed assistance leaving the ring.

Hrgovic praised his young opponent, calling him an exceptional fighter but saying he needs more experience.

Promoter Frank Warren indicated that Hrgovic could next face Cuban Frank Sanchez. The new champion, however, has bigger ambitions. He wants a unification fight with WBO champion Daniel Dubois, followed by a bout against WBC title holder Agit Kabayel.

Dubois handed Hrgovic his only professional defeat in 2024, adding an intriguing unfinished chapter to their potential rematch.
