Flood Situation Worsens in Assam, Death Toll Reaches 95

The flood situation in Assam worsened sharply on Wednesday, with the death toll rising to 95 after six more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. At the same time, the number of people affected by the deluge increased to over 1.6 lakh across 14 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The ASDMA said two people each drowned in Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, while one death each was reported from Golaghat and Morigaon. With these fatalities, the cumulative death toll from this year's floods has climbed to 95.

The latest flood bulletin stated that more than 1,60,600 people are currently affected in Biswanath, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri districts.

Among the worst-hit regions, Sivasagar reported over 57,000 affected residents, followed by Golaghat with around 34,000 and Jorhat with nearly 25,000. The situation has deteriorated significantly since Tuesday, when around 1.22 lakh people across five districts were impacted.

To assist those displaced, the state administration is operating 105 relief camps and relief distribution centres across six districts, providing shelter and aid to 44,523 people.

During the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 528.44 quintals of rice, 126.72 quintals of dal, 73.21 quintals of salt, and 2,519.64 litres of mustard oil among affected families.

The ASDMA reported that 563 villages remain submerged, while 16,951.76 hectares of agricultural land have been damaged. Floodwaters have also caused extensive damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Dhansiri River continued to flow above the danger level at Numaligarh. The floods have also severely affected livestock, with 35,025 domestic animals and poultry impacted, while 8,529 animals and birds have been washed away, highlighting the widespread impact of the disaster across the state.
